Semester 1 done and dusted!

After almost 2 years of intermittent classroom learning and distanced learning at home all schools in Cambodia opened up again full time at the start of 2022!

Staff at Shine were not sure to what extent students would have suffered from learning loss so the first week back included one to one testing to understand students capabilities. Then throughout the semester focused small group learning to ensure all students were at the same level as the rest of their peers.

We kept class sizes smaller and focused on Khmer and mathematics. Students caught up quickly and we were all delighted when every single student passed their end of semester exams in April.

The semester ended just before Khmer New Year and Shine celebrated with a student prize giving, traditional Cambodian games, a yummy chicken curry lunch and a ‘Shine’s got talent’ show where teachers and students alike performed to each other showcasing their many talents!

Semester 2 started in May with an additional 36 students, who were on the waiting list, and a re-introduction of English to the curriculum. We now have just over 100 students studying with us.

Donation of dental care

Thank you to our charity partner M’Lop Tapang who made it possible for 30 students to visit the dentist for free treatment in May and June. Good dental hygiene is very important and students brush their teeth after lunch at Shine.

Donations from Alibaba Philanthropic

Earlier in the year, as part of an Education in Sihanoukville initiative, many high-ranking Government officials visited Otres to meet teachers and students. Representatives from Alibaba Philanthropic donated school bags and school supplies. It was a very proud day for us all at Shine and a recognition of the hard work of students!

1,491 lunches provided

Shine provides lunch for students who need it. We don’t want hunger to be a barrier to learning. In the first 6 months of this year, Shine dished up 1,491 healthy lunches for students. And we always have clean drinking water available at all times.

11,471 Hours of education delivered

Between January and the end of June this year, Shine delivered an incredible 11,471 hours of classroom education. The following is a quote from a grade 5 student that we couldn’t agree with more.

“With education, I can support myself in the future”
We thank you for your continued support towards Shine Cambodia and are excited to share our journey with you !
